I am purchasing an in-car GPS video system which comes with an active antenna on a rather long cable. I would prefer to replace the bundled antenna with an antenna attached directly to the GSP receiver.

Would it be possible to use this antenna with an appropriate adaptor (MCX->BNC), or would this be unsuitable for the job?

If unsuitable, are you able to recommend any small (and low-cost) alternatives?

The Garmin BNC Portable Internal Antenna is passive and would most likely not work with your machine. You can shorten the cable you have. Just be sure not to splice it but to cut to length then ad a new end.

What device do you have? It may be best to contact that manufacturer for antenna suggestions. If it is a device we sell I can make a suggestion for you but need to know what product you have.

Thanks for your response Jordan.

The device is a V1000GS data recorder, one of several low-cost camera/GPS/G-force units now on the market from China. Getting assistance from the manufacturer is unlikely. I'm hoping if I remove the antenna from the plastic case, I should be left with a relatively small antenna that may fit under the roof panel without any modification. It looks like I should expect something no bigger than 27x27x7mm inside.

I found some videos on the product and I would suggest buying a MCX RF connector for RG174 (double check your cable size). You can have a local tech shop put it on your GPS antenna once it is shortened. It takes a fine tip soldering iron and steady hands. You may already have those at home.

I do not have the products to help you at this time. The Garmin GA25MCX would be the best solution from my inventory but the cable would still need to be shortened.

Thanks for your assistance. I'm evaluating the camera with the full length cable, but I may opt to shorted the cable and add a new MCX connector in the future. It turned out the longer cable and the larger antenna was not as invasive as I thought it would be.

You can shorted the GPS antenna if you put a new MCX end on. Do not splice the cable for that will not work properly. Have fun!
