Hello Reg,
The compatible XM radio for your GPSMap 478 is the GXM30.
The GXM30A is for aviation units and the GXM 40 is for newer units. Your unit is not listed on Garmins site as being compatible with the GXM-40.
Cheers

I had this same question, according to Garmin's firmware upgrade 4.10, the GXM 40 is compatible:
Changes made from version 3.90 to 4.10:
* Improved XM weather data map display algorithm
* Added support for GXM 40 antenna
* Improved battery gauge accuracy

I have a Zumo 550 of which this antenna is listed as the one to receive weather info. If this antenna (GXM 30 or 30A) is discontinued, is there a replacement for it? Thx

I too have a Garmin Zumo 550 & want to subscribe to XM Radio. Which antenna do you recommend the GXM 30 or 40?

The GXM 30 is the only XM antenna compatible with the Zumo 550, but as it has been discontinued we as a retailer are unable to obtain them anymore. Your best bet would be to find one through consignment websites like eBay, Kijiji or Craigslist.
