Is the screen plastic or glass, similar to smart phones,for a lighter touch requirement?

The screen on the Nuvi 50 is plastic, it is not a capacitive screen like many smartphones.

Do any units have a capacitive screen? Another question...Does the Nuvi 50 have the capabilty for route creation?

You need to look at the higher end units to get a capacitive screen. For example the nuvi 3790. Yes the nuvi will create one active route but you can not save or pre-plan routes.
