I currently own the nuvi 1450. Unfortunately, for quite some time the battery on this unit does not hold a charge-regardless of how long I charge it. So, it only works when plugged in to a power source. I don't know if this battery issue is a known defect issue or not?

In any case, I was considering the nuvi 50LM model as a replacement. I would like to know if this model is considered an upgrade or downgrade from thew 1450 model (both 5" display)- lifetime maps and traffic not to be considered in the decision. Thank you.

The 50LM is a downgrade to the nuvi 1450. The better option would be the nuvi 2555 or nuvi 2595.

Your 1450 battery may have became unplugged inside the case. REMADY: Open case and replug the conecters together. I have a 755T and this has happened twice to me.
