The Garmin nuvi 1690 is obsolete and does not work fully in Canada. You also need to make sure you get the Canadian version of the 1690 for the nulink to work properly. The nulink services are better in the USA. As per the Garmin nuvi 3490. It is a lot newer and works just as good in Canada as it does in the USA. The 3490 also has a better screen and is designed with style in mind. Like a Apple product. I would not recommend the nuvi 1690 because it is discontinued and is not as good as the nuvi 3490.

It does everything better. Routing is different and takes into account driving habits, traffic and more. It has a better clearer screen. It will allow you to give verbal voice commands. It has quick search so you do not have to choose a category. There are lots more.

The nuvi 1690 doesn't really compare to it other than they will both get your from your location to your destination. The nulink service was a cool idea but never took off in Canada like it did in the states.

** One drawback to the nuvi 3490 is you can not use it with gloves on because it uses a capacitive touch screen.

You sure can. All the new nuvi units will take the micro sd card.
