How does the 3490LMT compare to the 3790LMT? There seems to be a few new functionalities that are given new names this year. Are they the same as what was available in last year's high end models like the 3790?

The 3490LMT i better in many ways. The only thing I can not get to work properly on the nuvi 3490 is the new speech recognition of address's.
It now can take the full address without saying each part individually. For myself my speech pattern doesn't work with it well. However my coworker has minimal issues speaking the address. I guess it comes down to your accent. Maybe Garmin will give the choice in future updates to say the address part by part instead of just as one sentence.

The nuvi 3490 can take PC planned routes where the nuvi 3790 could not. It has an improved search engine compared to the nuvi 3790.

Is this done with Basecamp (or can Mapsource do this too)?

BaseCamp is the new software that replaces Mapsource. Basecamp is much better in my opinion.

I have a gps that I use Mapsource for.
Will I be able to install and run both Basecamp and Mapsource on the same computer?

You can run both Basecamp and Mapsource on the same computer. You will find once you learn Basecamp you will not want to use Mapsource anymore.
