I would like to down load routes onto a Nuvi 1490 or 1490lmt, to do this will I need to buy a CD with map source on it directly from Garmin?

Custom routes can be created and transferred to the GPS using Basecamp.
Basecamp is a free download from Garmin.

The demonstration video is using Topo Canada but will work with City Navigator as well.

Once the route is sent to the GPS, go to Tools > arrow down to My Data > Import Route(s).
Place a check mark in the box beside the route and press Import.
Go back to the main menu and press Where To? > arrow down to Routes and the imported route will show in the list.

If you purchased a 1490LMT then the street map updates for north America are free. That does not include topo maps or other kinds. Just the ones preloaded when you bought it.
