I am unable to register this unit using the latest updated version of Windows XP.
Both computers are unable to find the device on the USB cable.
A long conversation with Tech support at Garmin was essentially a waste of time. His suggestion was to return it to the dealer for exchange.
I decided to try and register on my neighbor's laptop running Vista home premium.
It installed without any difficulty. It would appear this unit is NOT compatable with WinXP.

The problem may be that you do not have the Garmin communicator plugin installed. It may also be a security issue with you computer. Did you try using a different browser when registering the unit?
Did the unit mount like a harddrive? That series connects fine with our in office Windows XP machine.

I also had a hassle trying to install the Garmin Communicator (on XP). Garmin popup says you need "current" version of Windows Media Player, without saying why. Makes no sense to me--Garmin should explain! I had WMP 10 which I don't like and almost never use but finally reluctantly decided to "update" that to WMP 11, before the Garmin drivers would finally "initialize" so the PC would see the nuvi. Process was rather sketchily described by Garmin! WMP should not be required!
