I am looking at a Garmin nuvi50LM that comes loaded with US 49 states maps only. What is the process to upload with North American maps to include Canada.

The easiest way is just to ad a Canadian card to the unit.

You could also buy the City Navigator North American NT maps on DVD with a SD card and load them that way. The above is a little cheaper and easier.

This particular GPS comes preloaded with US and Canada.
The US mapping version is available but is only $10.00 less in price.

Could someone explain why the Nuvi 50LM is considered to be a downgrade of the 1250? I just bought this for a birthday gift and want to find out if this is the bet product for the $'s? We actually exchanged the 1250 thinking this was the upgraded newer gps. Any help would be most appreciated as we have not used any GPS' before and welcome help!

The 50LM has a larger screen and has all the main GPS functions that the nuvi 1250 has. The 1250 has a nicer feel to it compared to the nuvi 50LM. For basic navigation either is fine.
