Would this type of GPS be a good model for snowmobiling? Or is there a better GPS for this purpose?

No this device is better suited for paved roads. You will be better off with a Garmin Montana or Garmin Oregon GPS unit for snowmobiles. One other unit to consider is the GPSMap 62S which is push button and not touch screen.

I have used mine for a year now including snowmobile and I find it great not as good as some of the premium units that are available, but when loaded with topo maps it is a pretty good unit, especially for the price.

As Perry said, it will work on a snowmobile and show you where you are, where, you're going. etc and when loaded with topo maps they will show up. However, it does not have many sought after outdoor features such as a 3-axis compass, altimeter, and to some users, the most important feature it lakes is the ability to record your tracks. The unit will do one single tracklog, but it can't be exported to a computer and you can't make multiple tracks. We recommend going with a dedicated handheld unit for any type of outdoor use if you don't absolutely need the Nuvi for its automotive features.
