I was all set to purchase when I realized that the gps plugged directly into the base. Can you also recharge it directly so I don't have to take the base with me to a foreign city??

To charge it from the cigarette lighter adapter you will need the powered cradle. However there is an AC adapter that can be used directly with the microUSB port on the back of the GPS
