There is a travel charger available for 220 V. What is the part number of the charger you have. You did not mention which one you have.

Here is a link to the travel charger.

Thanks Jordan - incidentally, I 've noticed the quality of your answers as I've checked out various units and you are great!! We travel a lot and have a travel transformer that transforms 220 to 110 so I will just use that - the chargers for my cameras work on both and that's handy - had hoped it would be true of 1490 as well. This is my firt gps so I'm a bit of a luddite. I'm assuming that when I download and instal a memory card (foreign maps N.A. updates etc) that it works seamlessly just as a second hard drive works on my computer. Have yet to purchase my unit but it looks like it might be the 1490 LTM - anything better for around the $160 - $180 mark (hand held operation for walk-arounds upcoming in Buenos Aires and battery life is relevant but basically we'll use it 95 percent of the time in our cars)

I don't have a recommendations in that price range. The best unit for what you mentioned is the Montana 650 but it will be very pricey once you add all the maps and other accessories you will need. Another one to look at is the nuvi 2595 which will not have memory limitations when you do a map update. Please note that nuvi's are not good for hiking but should be fine for walking around urban areas.

Loading the maps is very easy. The card will act like a second hard drive and Garmin includes software such as mapinstall with their maps for installing them to the card. If you are new it make take a few tries to figure out where everything is. Garmin has a support number if you get stuck. 1-800-800-1020
