I am considering a Garmin Nuvi 50 LM and would appreciate any feedback on how one could load maps produced by a trip planner like Microsoft Streets & Trips. Essentially, I am looking to confirm that I could plan trips using MS Streets & Trips and transfer that to a Garmin Nuvi 50 LM /SD Card and use to navigate. Thanks in advance.

You will not be able to do that with a nuvi 50LM. You can get that function out of the higher end units like the Zumo series, Dezl series and high end nuvi's like the 3490LMT.
It is recommended to use the Garmin Basecamp software for trip planning. Basecamp will read the maps from the GPS device so you can plan trips on the computer.
