Please read the below information if you want to plan your routes:

Since the device has Preloaded City Navigator® NT North America maps, you can download and install Garim's free BaseCamp software and use the maps on your device (it must be plugged in) to create routes etc. That said you can't view/use those maps without the GPS unit connected.

However if you want to see the maps without your 550 being connected you have to purchase City Navigator (either on DVD or via a Lifetime maps subscription).

GPS city has been stating that you in order to route, you NEED to buy the extra DVD, which is not true. Only if you want to plan your routes and your GPS isn't available to be plugged in.

A while back you could not do what you mentioned. As of a year ago Garmin added the ability to read maps from your device.

Could you point out where you saw the misinformation so that we can update it. There may be a few place on our site that refer to the older method of using maps on a PC/Mac.

Its in a few areas - sorry I can't highlight.

However, I also have learned that, if buy this item "new", like from GPS city, you get 1 free map upgrade within 90 days. During that process (through garmin) there is the option to download the maps to your GPS AND Computer!

If you choose the option to also download to your computer, then you can plan routes on your computer without the GPS device and only connect it when you want to transfer your routes :)

There is no need to buy the City Navigator CD or rights outside of the device because you own it as part of your garmin device.
