How to run the map update?

Should the map update replace the old map? When I got my 3570 there was a new map available (2013.10). I used the Gamin Lifetime Map Updater (Mac OSX 10.7) to download it to my computer. Once I'd done that it said the map was up to date although on the 3570 it still listed only the older map (2012.20). I tried changing the preference to downloading it to the nuvi instead of the computer, but it still insisted the map was up to date.

I opened Garmin Mapinstall and it allows me to install the new map, but only in addition to the old map (which is grayed out, I can't uncheck it). Once the new map is installed, the memory is nearly full.

After some experimentation I can answer this: the update should replace the original map. What I did wrong apparently was have the lifetime map installer download to the computer instead of selecting "both" -- changing this selection after the fact made no difference, and the separate Garmin Mapinstall program won't install it correctly (contrary to Garmin's documentation).

How I fixed it: in Garmin MapInstall I uninstalled the 2013.10 map leaving only the original 2012.20 map (which MapInstall won't let you touch). Then in the lifetime map installer I changed the preference to "both" and then selected "reinstall maps" in the menu, and it worked correctly. The Nuvi only shows the 2013.10 maps as installed and has over 2 GB free space instead of being almost full.

Interesting side note: there no longer appears to be a 4 GB limit on additional maps added to the microSD card through Garmin MapInstall. With an 8GB card installed, MapInstall shows over 11GB available for uploading maps and happily loaded all of Topo US 24k West and Southwest, in the ballpark of 7GB. It broke these down into 2 files each on the card.
