When I plug in the power my screen comes up black and I have to touch the power button and try and find the place on the screen to make the brightness to come up, Unit works fine if it on it own battery power.

That is odd. It may be a brightness setting. When your unit is plugged into power go to the Tools menu, Then Display, then try adjusting the brightness so that it is viewable. Then reboot the GPS and see if all is good.
If that does not work try an update to the firmware. This can be done using Garmins free program "webupdater". Back up all user data before doing the update just in case it gets deleted from the machine.
Also you can try a quick reset after backing up your data. Turn your GPS off then turn it on while holding your finger in the bottom right corner of the touch screen. You may have to try it a few times and slightly shift your finger.
One last note is to make sure you are using a Garmin vehicle Charger for the unit. Some chargers for cell phones and other devices wont work properly even though they fit the same port.
Cheers
