Is this an almost end-of-the-line product, meaning will it be discontinued soon? I don't see this listed on the 2012 current line up on Garmin's website.

The nuvi 550 is an older product but Garmin has not announced its end of life yet. I personally prefer the Montana series which is a much better unit than the nuvi 550 for all around use

Regarding the Montana series, even for street navigation it's better than the Nuvi?

It will be the same (or similar) as an older nuvi. The new nuvis like the 3590LMT have guidance 3.0 that the Montana does not have. Guidance 3.0 is much easier for entering data than in the older nuvi's.

For guidance the Montana will be very similar to a nuvi. If you are looking for a device for motorcycle use then you should look at the zumo 660 or zumo 665.

I checked out the Montana series. Too expensive. But, LOVE the long battery life.

Jordan, would you be able to guess roughly when the Nuvi 550 would be no longer in production? I ask, because I can't afford the unit right now, but could in maybe about 6 months. And, as far as waterproof and affordable GPS goes, this unit seems to be the only choice!

We would not know that and Garmin normally does not release that type of information. Normally when they stop production of a unit you can still get it. It will take a little bit after for stock to run out.
