How to perform maps updates?

I bought a Nuvi 40LM. I was able to load the maps the first time and use the product. I loaded them directly to the GPS only, (no maps copy to the PC).
I want to run the update now and to load the maps into the PC (not into the Nuvi directly as it took forever the first time. I would like to copy them later to the GPS).
I start the Lifetime updater program, I changed configuration to load maps on PC only. It sasys there is an update file available, it says loading.... but nothing happens.
At this time the GPS is NOT connected to the PC.
Please telll me what am I doing wrong. How can I download the update?

Once the maps are on the PC you need to use the free Garmin program Map Install to put them onto a memory card or the unit. Mapinstall downloads with the lifetime map updater. If you do not have it try downloading it from Garmin again.

The problem is the updated maps do NOT arrive to the PC. I launch Garmin Lifetime Updater, it informs me there is an update to donwload. it says downloading files, BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. No file at all is donwloaded. Thanks for your help

Have you tried using Mapinstall like I mentioned above?
