Background:Purchased & received ~2 weeks ago. Worked fine out of box, could do all I tried as a test. I added 4gb micro sd card yesterday and loggon on to register/update maps. Choice was N America or Europe. Although to be used in both areas NA was obvious choice so that was chosen.

Went through Garmin's different screens and at dashboard choose NA. Took several hours to load into unit. Turned unit on and it is useless now. Map detail is non-existent Its like driving on a white scree. Shows couple of main roads but no detail roads or areas. It cannot "find in "go to"" my own or close village. They don't exist on unit. It is now worthless as a gps unit.

How do I go back to original maps or make this download,(which my computer hookup says is on the sd card?) work ? Why would it be on sd card and not in the unit?

Can this be fixed or must it be returned. Intent was to buy the cityxplorer maps for NYC,London,Brussels, Budapest and have those , I thought, go on sd card. that would be a waste now.

I wanted this unit to get used to traveling with it thru New England/NYC within the next three weeks, before going to Europe so some urgency
Please give me some direction

Sometimes after doing an update the maps get turned off and need to be enabled again.
To do this go into the Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info and make sure that there is a check in the boxes next to the maps.

Thank you Warehouse Guy,
I have looked at that and it only shows the Europe map listed. I suspect, but do not know for sure, is that the update went to the microSD card and I can find no way that the unit looks at that card or recognizes it, (My computer when hooked up shows the card and it has a very large file on it.) because no box in the info page shows North America map at all nor does it show a sd card is present? I find nothing about the card in their manual that would be useful.

Warehouse Guy, based upon your comments I rethought my map updating. I removed the 4gb chip. and looked at reloading the N America map. It would not reload the entire US and Canada without adding a chip, which is what I had done. I do not think the NUVI could recognize anything on that chip so no map showed up. I do not know why if the entire map was on it originally it will not update it per say but it wouldn't, so I tried Canada and entire eastern seaboard of US. That fit onto the NUVI and shows up as a NA map. It appears the maps are correct for my hamlet again but I cannot go for a ride today to check further.
I believe your comments have corrected my situation, Thank you.
Now I need to figure out how to get it to recognize the chip if I buy city maps for Europe and NYC.
Again Thanks
Brian

When downloading the map update, choose the option to load the map to the computer only. After the map is on the computer, use Garmin Mapinstall to load the map to the microSD card. Garmin Mapinstall is a free program from Garmin.
