Shutdown/reboot cycle

My 550 starts shutting down and rebooting after 1/2 to 1 hour of being plugged into my motorcycle 12v. outlet. It works fine on its own battery.
When it is rebooting it shows the computer symbol at the bottom of the screen and the green loading bar. Sometimes it will continue to the Where To screen but when I touch that or any other icon it shuts down and starts over again.
The unit is only a couple of months old and has been great in all other respects. This problem started the second day I used it on the bike.

Thanks,
Rob.

Are you using a Garmin cable to power it? If not that may be the issue. The other problem may be the cable has a short in it. Does the same problem happen when using it in a car? Does the cable get hot?

I use the Garmin cable to the 12v outlet on the bike. I tried it in the truck yesterday and it lost power several times but got it back and rebooted of its own accord. After doing this several times it was fine for the remaining 3 hours it was in the truck, although the Nuvi battery did not charge. It charged ok from the ac adaptor when I got home.

The connection between the Garmin vehicle adaptor and the 12v. outlet on the bike gets slightly warm.

When plugged into the usb on the computer the Garmin computer icon comes on and the green loading bar starts but disappears before it has completed. After that the computer icon stays on until about 10 seconds after the unit is unplugged from the computer. Then it switches to its own battery and works normally.
This is a new issue.

Thanks,
Rob.

If it wont connect to the computer you will not be able to update it. Sounds like the unit is a little intermittent. It will be best to have the unit repair/replaced. If purchased from GPS City in the past 30 days or if you have our extended warranty please contact us.

In Canada the repair depot is raytech. 1-888-887-6627

Feel free to phone Garmin also. 1-800-800-1020

Thanks Jordan, unfortunately the order for the unit is dated July 13th although it was not shipped right away as the ac adaptor was not in stock. I'll see what Garmin can do for me.

Rob.

I have exactly the same problem, and it has driven me crazy. I have replaced the GPS twice, same problem. I use the OEM 12V connector cord. I use the same GPS in my car, and the rebooting never happens. I wonder if it might be due to the extra vibration on the bike (RAM mount), or maybe the bike puts out a little more voltage. The problem seems to be more prevalent when the GPS reaches a full charge. A workaround I have discovered is to run the GPS on battery, then plug in the USB cord only to charge it up. It usually doesn't reboot until it reaches a full charge.

I have the same problem. It is an issue during spirited sections of rides, likely due to increased vibration at higher RPMs. I can move the plug around a bit and it aborts the reboot sequence. I would prefer for it to automatically revert to battery power without threatening to reboot, but Garmin is useless in more ways than just this issue (overpriced units, can't import or navigate tracks without converting via difficult to use software).
