I recently travelled from Ottawa, Ontario to Watkins Glen NY.
The 1450 would not route me through Ogdensburg NY unless I added it as a via point. The same issue on my return. What's up? This was by far the shortest & fastest route. The only avoidance I used was major highways. It wanted to take me through Cornwall, Ontario.

The GPS will give you the fastest route or shortest based on the information it has. If there is an error in the DB it may take you a different way. Sometimes the unit will take you a route you are not familiar with but it may turn out to be the better way. That is not always the case. The major highways avoidance may of cause some of the routing differences. Did you try with no avoidance's so that it picks the shortest or fastest with no limitations.

I just did a route with Google from Ottawa to Watkins Glen and Google did not go through Ogdensburg either.

Thanks Jordan
I tried the google map route & it went directly through Ogdensburg. This was with avoiding highways. I did try my Garmin with no avoidances with the same results. How about the other Garmin models? Do they avoid Ogdensburg as well? Also last weekend I went from Ottawa to an address in Oshawa, On. About 40 km's from my destination the Garmin suddenly added Niagra Falls as a via point. I had to reset my original address to get back on track. Is it possible there is a bug in my unit?

All the units will route in similar ways. It is best to add Ogdensburg as a via point so the unit routes you through that area.

The units sometimes taking you a weird route is normal no matter what GPS you have may it be a Magellan, Tomtom or Garmin. They all have map errors and take into account different things such as traffic and other avoidance's. They are not perfect machines but when you do not know where you are going they are priceless.

If you keep your unit up to date and give regular feedback to Garmin you should see less of these oddities over time.
