Just received my Garmin 550 and noticed that it has the different modes e.g. driving, walking,bicycling, and the one that has me puzzeled is scootering?? instead of boating. Is it so that I have to buy expensive marine mapping before this GPS can be used for the boating mode will even appear???

Hello Luc,

This unit is best suited for driving with a little marine and hiking sprinkled in. For marine you would put it into Hiking mode. You will need charts for your area, if available. A Garmin Oregon 450 or a Garmin Chart Plotter are recommended if you need a full time boating GPS.

I just used some marine maps in the Nuvi 550 and it looks like BOAT MODE will show up when compatible maps are present.
