My Garmin V finally wore out I liked it for several reasons, including the fact that I could download tracks and waypoints to Excel, or Google Maps. I bought a 3590 but it doesn't have those features --- I think --- I can connect the unit to my PC but the files inside it aren't readable. Is there a way of downloading tracks etc.? Thanks.

You can use the free program Garmin Basecamp to get your data off the GPS unit.

If you mount the unit like a hard drive you can copy the GPX folder to your computer. You data will be located there too. GPX is a common file format. You can use GPSBabel to convert it to a CSV which can be opened by Excell.

The routes are automatically saved when you create them in Basecamp. You just need to transfer them to the unit.

Actually I have some trips on the unit in Trip Planner that I created on the Unit. I would like to see them in Basecamp.
Maybe I didn't ask the question correctly the first time.

I just gave the process a try and I found that routes can not be downloaded from the nuvi 3590 using Basecamp. I was able to transfer routes to the unit from the PC. However I could not get them off the unit using basecamp.
