I have a new Garmin Nuvi 50LM and have used it on a couple of out of town trips. Most of the time it just kept saying can't acquire satellites. I would have been in big trouble had I not thought to bring along mapquest directions. That is the reason I bought it in the first place! I will be leaving again in a couple of days and would like to use my GPS but what if the same problem happens again? I'll be traveling alone again and need to know where I'm going. Can you please advise? Thanks!!

Any time you travel a long distance with the unit off the unit must initialize for the new area. That can take up to 20 minutes in that model. This problem is normal when you go somewhere by plane. You need take it outside and let it track before moving. If you start moving and it did not have a lock it will not get one until you stop long enough.

I hope giving the unit some more time to track satellites will help. You can also see if it is tracking satellites by using the antenna strength meter on the main screen. If one bar lights up it is searching and give it some time. Eventually all will light up green. If no bars are lighting up then the unit is not seeing any satellites. If this is the case and you are outside then your unit may be defective.
