Nuvi 550 Display vs Garmin Quest w/ Metroguide

Original question asked on May 25, 2010, 1:04pm
I have a Garmin Quest and Nuvi 260W loaded with Metroguide Canada V5. At the 300M scale, the Quest displays logging roads and lake/river names but the 260W only displays roads, no water. With the same scale and same map, what will the Nuvi 550 display? I'd like to replace the Quest to get a lager screen but have been unable to find a GPS that works as well.

Thanks.

Hello BAM,

The Nuvi 550 will view similar to the Nuvi 260W. You may want to check your detail settings to see what level you are at. That will effect what you see at different zoom levels.

Tools->Settings->Map->Map Detail

Cheers
Jordan

Map detail set to highest always. Glad I didn't go ahead and buy the 550 because of all the good reviews.

Garmin says the 550 will display similiar to the Quest. Found a tidbit in an unrelated question on the Garmin site that solved it all. Multiple maps loaded on a GPS are mutually exclusive not cumulative. The map used to display goes according to a Garmin pecking order. City Navigator (the worst) is always used first if checked. Only the map you want to use should be checked on the list. Now even the 260W displays like the Quest.

Hello BAM

In response to what you read on Garmins site. That will not effect how streets are seen at different Zoom levels. It really relates to when you have multiple maps sets in the unit. You can only view one at a time. They just talk about the order they are in, on the Map info screen.

The Nuvi 550 does not view similar to the Quest. They have two different ways of viewing mapping 2d vs 3D. You can see the difference by viewing the different unit pics on our site.

Quest http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-quest-2.html
Nuvi550 http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-550.html

Also once in a while when you do a map update the map view will change at various zoom levels because Garmin changed the layers.
