Following Basecamp prepared routes

Garmin Nuvi 1490 LMT

Will the 1490LMT upload and follow a Basecamp prepared route exactly and without internal recalculation or modification?

This is a vital concern to my planned purchase. I already have a 3490LMT which uploads routes OK, but refuses to follow them as planned - on the road it always changes the way the route runs regardless of the number of via points used (OK in demo mode though).

My old Streetpilot rans routes absolutely perfectly - why can't the 3490 do the same?

All the nuvi's will operate in the same(similar) manner. The nuvi 1490 being a much older unit will most likely not perform any better for you. I have not had any issues with the nuvi not following the preplanned route. Keep in mind you do not need to listen to the unit if you know a better way. It will recalculate if you get off route. So I suggest ignoring it if it decides to change the route on you. If you are planning the route you most likely know which way you want to go and only need the unit to verify you are going the correct way.

If the unit changes your route then the maps you are using to plan the route may not be the same as the ones in the unit. Maybe try changing the routing settings in the unit to see if that reduces the problems. Make sure the computer routing settings are the same as the units.

The 1490LMT has an important difference that being, while on a long main route and then you follow a new route (to a gas station for instance) After gasing and now you want to continue on your main route, select the route as normal and answer NO to the question of wanting to start at the beginning of the route. This will show the main route and just continue following the route shown.

Is there a Garmin unit that will follow planned routes exactly, like the old Streetpilot did? I've heard about a rather expensive unit for motorcycles that would seem to fit that bill. With the 3490, I have up to date matching maps on the unit and computer. I also have all avoidances turned off to avoid as much recalculation as possible. Still, the thing always makes changes. I may know what the planned route is but I won't remember it turn by turn, and as I'm alone in the car I need to be prompted for turns rather than trying to read them off a list of instructions.

Handheld devices are better for creating routes and following them. If your settings are not set properly they too will have a tough time following the route. Exact routes are better for outdoor navigation like hiking. In car mode you have to enter a lot of points and follow them exactly to have the devices work.
