3590LM charging problem?

Original question asked on Jan 16, 2013, 9:49pm
I recently required a new car and in the transition period to the new car i noticed my Garmin 3590LM bounce in and out of being charging by the GTM60 /dock unit and not being charged / threatening to turn itself off as it thinks it lost battery power from the lighter outlet.

This initially occurred on the rental car i first had , i dismissed it as being a fault of the socket in the car. However now with the new car, the same effect happens by lighter socket.

By micro USB to my computer the GPS charges fine.
The battery on the GPS was fairly low but its always worked until now.

Is this a problem with the fuse on the GTM60 or something else?
New car has 12v socket with 140watt power so that should not be the issue.

Suggestion would be appreciated :)

To me it sounds like a loose connection. Double check the pins on the cradle to see if any are bent or sitting to low to make a good connection.

Wiggle the cable connections when powered to see if there is a bad connection there. The unit should lose power momentarily.

unfortunately no obvious bent pins, they all move freely, (on the dock connector and on the gps itself where they connect to the gps there "seems" to be good connectivity.
one pin on the gps itself seems a little more wiggly than the others but goes back into place...

i multimetered the fuse, it seems to pass a signal through so not really sure if that means its good or not but its not a dead signal for sure.

am almost willing to try getting another gps cradle thing for the car but not sure if that will fix anything.. I'll need the actual dock for it.

I'm fearing its either the cradle.. (possibly cheaper) or the gps itself...
not sure how to validate. I don't have an adapter that will connect to the cig lighter to provide voltage on a stable platform...

thoughts? i think instead of a 33% chance of being right i'm at least at 50% now since I am pretty sure the fuse is okay.. (unfortunately thats the cheapest option to be okay)

I'm going to contact garmin directly to see what they suggest i guess...

I assume you wiggled the cables like mentioned and the unit did not lose power. Because of that it may be the unit. In that case it will need to be replaced. In Canada it will go to Raytech. 1-888-887-6627

If purchase from us with an extended warranty please feel free to contact us via phone for replacement.

Interestingly enough i was adventurous with my wallet in the last few days and purchased a new powered cradle thing, and a AC to cig lighter adapter ...to simulate the issue in a location without vibration.
(and a replacement GTM-60)

So far it seems the issue is actually the powered cradle...
The original cradle must have something not quite right with it.

I initially powered off the same cradle / GTM-60 and saw the intermittent charging indicator.
Switched the cradles for the new one and now it seems to be constantly showing its hooked to power. Also shows updated traffic with the original GTM-60 (still have not changed this yet)

Issue appears resolved.

Coincidentally i did get my gps via gpscity but nearly a year ago / no ext warranty.
Thanks for the help.. I'll post again if things change :)
