After charging my garmin - admittedly using a charger that is not a Garmin chager but had the same size mini usb plug - when I turned it on, the background for the menu screens is now black instead of white. Did I do something to the device by using a non-Garmin charger and can this be changed back?

The unit will auto switch the background color from white to black as the sun goes down. At night the black will cause less glare on the windshield.

Thanks! Is it an accurate assumption that my cell phone charger which has the same mini-usb connection will work with my Garmin and I don't have to buy a separate charger?

You can try it to see if it will work. I recommend getting the Garmin authentic chargers.
