Additional Maps needed for route planning?

I have been using Microsoft Streets and Trips for my trip planning for 15 years, and the GPS package for 5 years with my laptop in my motorhome. I am considering the 855 as a replacement GPS. I keep hearing about MapSource but I have yet to see a clear description how it works.
I was under the impression that the GPS units themselves already utilize maps for trip planning, why do we have to download more?
If you download the maps to a computer can you do the trip planning on the computer and download them into the 855?

Hello,
You do not need map source it is just something you can use with the Nuvi 855 for managing gps data and adding maps outside North America.

You can add other maps to your unit like other countries, custom maps and Topography. Mapsource is one of the programs used to do this. Right out of the box you will be ready to Navigate the roads of Canada and the USA.

Safe Travels!

GPS City, you gave me the answer I was looking for. After 15 years of hours of trip planning on the computer I was not looking forward to one finger pecking on the 855.
Now, if Mapsource City Navigator is half as good as MS Streets and Trips I'll be a happy old man.
Thanks
