Nuvi 1300 froze this morning - I'm unable to do anything with it: the initial screen is still there, GPS does not respond to on/off button or touching the screen. I tried to use charger - no effect. Please, help, I have to get back home.

I am not sure of the issue that you are having so you may want to Contact Garmin for assistance. 1-800-800-1020.
Here are some things you can try in the meantime to see if you can bring your unit back to life. First hold in the power button for a minute or two. This may cause the unit to reboot (it works on some of the older units). Next is to see if it will communicate with the PC. Download "Webupdater" from Garmin's website and run it with your unit attached to the PC. If the PC can talk to the unit it will send the latest firmware to it. If this does not work you will have to wait for the Battery to die so it resets.
Hope the above helps!
Cheers

The battaries have died, and the unit is working now.
Thank you for the advice!

I also had this problem with a Nuvi 350. After 3 or 4 recalculations the screen went blank and froze. It was still on but would not respond in any way. Had to wait until battery discharged then plugged in the charger and unit came back to life.

Hello GM,
On the Nuvi 350 there is a reset button under the antenna. If you press this you dont need to wait for the battery to die. For some other garmin units if you hold down the power button for an extended amount of time it will reset. Be sure to let Garmin no the circumstances when you unit freezes just in-case it is a know issue that can be fixed.

Have same problem as Billy with nuvi 1300, none of the suggestions from GPS city Mike will work, nor the resets as the touchscreen is not functioning either. Anyone else successfully solved this problem without having to return it to garmin?

Hello Robert,

No that is not normal. Please try an update to reset your GPS unit and to make sure it has the current version.

How do I trade in my 6 month old Nuvi 1300 for a TomTom. Mine locks up 10-15 times a day... Very dangerous, and highly frustrating.

Moving to a Tomtom most likely will create more frustration for you. It is best you get you nuvi replaced. If you do an update that may fix the unit without needing to replace it.

The last time I used my Garmin Nuvi 1350 it said it was time to update maps. Before we got home from our trip it stopped working. It has a white screen and a black dot that says "Press dot". It jumps around the screen. This is our second Garmin that stopped working after about one year. Please help!

The white screen is caused by a software bug. My Garmin nuvi 1300 worked OK when I got it and updated its software in December 2010. In April 2011 I updated its software to v5.10. After that update or perhaps the next one (I forget), the white-screen problem appeared. The problem was VERY bad and the receiver was practically useless after the update I installed 18 Sept 2012. On 09 Oct 2012, I gave up hope and I replaced my 1300 with a nuvi 50LM. The 50LM was great but my son needed it more than I did, so I gave it to him in January. I never got around to throwing out the useless 1300. Recently I was fooling around with it and made the wonderful discovery that going to Tools|Settings and touching "Restore" caused its white-screen problem to cease almost entirely. It appeared very seldom, just when certain pages were displayed and these were pages I didn't care about. I should have stopped right there. But I can't curb my urge to tinker and today when my 1300 nagged me to update its map, I went to Garmin's "Dashboard" web page, where I saw that another _software_ was available. Foolishly, I updated the 1300's software again. Now at the top of the "About" page, "Software Version 6.20" appears. Below, the "Software Version

[CONTINUATION] Below, the "Software Versions" field shows GPS version 4.30, text v6.20 (American English), and audio v3.10 (Am. Eng.-Jill). I never did update the map. Now the white screen appears much more often, mostly when pages I don't care about are displayed, but _sometimes_ when the main, "Where To"/"View Map" page is displayed. When this main page went all-white, touching the middle-right part of the screen where the "View Map" icon should have appeared got me to the map OK, and so far I have never had trouble with the navigation map. Independent of the white-screen problem, two good things to do are (1) reset the receiver by holding its power button down for 10 seconds and (2) both before and after any update (map or software), open the GARMIN storage-device icon on the screen of your computer open the folders named "Voice," "help," "text," and "keyboard, delete every foreign-language file that you don't need also delete all the .jpg files and all the icons for vehicles etc. that you don't need and then empty the Mac OS Trash or Windows Recycle Bin to make more storage available. The nuvi 1300 will have trouble and installations will fail if too little storage is free. Free space of 360 MB is not enough. 560 MB
