I am planning a 2 week road trip to the east coast and would like to pre-plan the route ahead of time on my computer. Will this unit allow me to do so. If not....which unit will? We would like to use only secondary roads etc to follow the coast etc.

Hello Willy,

You can plan routes on the computer using this unit but you will also need City Navigator on DVD. You can then pre plan routes on the computer using Garmin RoadTrip.

Hope this helps!

Can I not use something like google earth or google maps to plot my route and then transfer them into the 1490? City Navigator on DVD is a paid for system or am I able to get it for free? I want to be able to plan cross country routes and possibly also into the US.
Thanks.

Hello Willys,

You can do some planning with Google earth. You do waypoints with no issues. You may have difficulty with routes.

Cheers
