I have a Garmin 2730 that has an external antenna. It sometimes has a problem loosing satellite reception. I would like to mount the 1490 on the shifter console in the car, but am concerned that it won't be able to maintain satellite lock?

How sensitive is the receiver and onboard antenna and will I be able to mount the unit where I want?

Thanks for your help.

John

Hello John,

We have not had any problems with the new units receiving satellite signals. However every vehicle is different. If you have a lot of tint or driving a camper like vehicle then you may need a unit with external antenna.

The antenna's in the GPS units we sell today should be sensitive enough for 99.9% of urban driving.

You noted no problems with urban driving, but what about rural driving? Any problems receiving signal in heavily wooded or remote areas? How about problems receiving signal with weather conditions i.e. heavy snow, rain, fog etc...?

Hello Debbie,

Rural areas usually have less problems because the lack of large building and other obstacles to the GPS signal. I usually say Urban when referring to nuvi's because that is their main use. Rural is the same with less problems.

Cheers
Jordan
