Using nuvi 550 Offroad?

What are the fundamental differences between the 60CSx and Nuvi 550 with respect how the units handle topographic maps, gpx importing and exporting and routing.

I was originally looking at the 60CSx, but would give up the portability for a larger screen size if this unit is considered as capable for general usage off road.

Hello,

The 550 is a crossover unit so it handles the TOPO's more like a vehicle unit. The 550 unit still renders the TOPO maps but alot slower than a 60CSX would. You get the handheld function of TrackBac w/ the 550 but can save multiple tracks w/ a 60CSX. The 550 is definitely suitable for usage offroad if it mostly for reference and not saving multiple tracks and so forth.

Hope this helps!

In your honest opinion. Which one is more bang for the buck? And which one would one be happier with? I have played with some of the 2xx series and found them painfully slow! Is the 550 much faster?

Hello,

To be honest none of the vehicle units render TOPO maps as well as the handheld series do, but in comparison from the 2xx to the 550. You could see a slight increase in the speed but nothing too noticeable.

Hope this helps!

Does the 550 allow for routing off road and trails?

Ultimately, Is there a touchscreen equivalent of the 60CSx? That might be the easiest question to ask for comparison purposes. :)

Thanks for all the help.

Hello Monster,

The Nuvi 550 is not as powerful as the 60CSX. A better touch screen equivalent is the Oregon 450. The Nuvi 550 is a good unit for basic navigation in a vehicle on roads or off road. It will follow routable roads and trails. If your 60CSx can route along the map data then the nuvi will be able to route along the same map.
