Route recalc on/off w/ Nuvi 550?

Garmin Nuvi 550

I am considering a 550 to replace a GPSMAP 60CSx I used for navigating on my motorcycle. With the 60CSx, the recalc had ON, OFF or PROMPTED as options. Does this unit have the same OFF option? I want to create a route in Mapsource (I would also need the City Nav 2010 DVD) and load it to the Nuvi. I don't want it to recalc a route if I wander off the chosen path. I know the CSx would recalc a route when I first loaded it on the device, and I assume the Nuvi will as well, but I don't want a recalc once I am on the fly.
Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately cross over units lack a lot of features compared to hand-helds. The Nuvi 550 does not have the ability to turn off Auto-routing off.

The 60csx will have a bunch more features that the Nuvi 550 wont. I would recommend the GPSMap 478 if you want most of the same features the 60csx has.

Thanks for the reply.
I will have a look at that unit. I sold the 60CSx in hopes of getting a Zumo 660, but reading the forums and reviews, I think it may be more than I need (and a bit more $$$ for the features that I wanted).

I just wanted a bit bigger sunlight readable screen on a unit that I doesn't recalculate a route I pre plan in Mapsource. I know the Zumo's do that, but at 2X the price of a CSx, I should have kept the handheld and just put up with the initial recalc when I load a route to it. I may even consider going back to a 60CSx as it has more features than any other unit I have investigated.

Thanks again for the response.

The GPSMap 478 will have a screen size similar to the zumo and it has Preloaded mapping for North America, turn by turn nav and most of the features your 60csx had. All you need to do is add the bike mounts. the unit is sunlight readable because it is also made for use on a boat.
Cheers

I was looking through the manual, I can't see where it will let me turn the Auto Recalculation On, Prompted or OFF.

I don't see where I can preplan a route in mapsource and send it to the unit, but I assume it will do that. I see it needs a proprietary memory card as well. I will consider this or another 60CSx

Thanks for all the help.

I understand the memory cards are a drawback because they are expensive and proprietary. Unfortunately the manuals don't reflect everything you can do on the units. The route planning would be in the mapsource manual and the accessing of routes in the 478 manual. the 60csx is still our best seller so you wont go wring with it. Have a great day

I picked up a Nuvi550 from gpscity a few months ago. Loaded it with the new Canada Topo software as well. I am pretty sure you can put it into offroad mode and just tell it to navigate point-to-point and not always auto-route.
