Howdy RT,
I would not recommend the lifetime update for the C530. The LT update is only good for the life of your unit (C530). The life of a GPS is approximately three years or 1000 battery charges. After that it is smarter to buy a new unit, than to get your old one fixed. The Streetpilot C530 is pretty much at the end of its life.
Secondly your unit can not hold all of North America due to memory limitations. It only has enough room for one country and some border areas. Some customers with phone help from Garmin were able to hack the update into an external memory card.

Cheers
Jordan
