The answers to the “pre plan your trip” question #1 and question #2 re the 3790LMT are conflicting with each other. Question#1 asks “can I use mapsource to transfer routes to the 3790” Jordon replied that us you can as the unit holds 100 routes. However the replied the question #2 re routes, by Jordan, says that you can not do it, how come? Why not and which new models work better in loading routes? Are all the new ones the same as the 3790. I need the ability to do this and load routes and at $400 for the 3790 I will have an expensive item that will not the job. What should I buy?

Routes cannot be transferred to the Garmin 37XX series units. Waypoints can be transferred via mapsource to the 37XX. Then you can use the nuvi 37xx Trip Planner to create a route in the unit.

To be able to transfer routes you will need a different unit. The nuvi 13XX and 14XX will allow routes to be transferred over to the unit. However they have mapping limitations when you do an update to the maps. They no longer hold all of North America once updated.

After speaking with Garmin about the problem, I am not alone. Garmin is working on the problem and a firmware update is coming by the end of March. The 37XX and the 23XX units re affected and maybe the 24XX units as well. Thank you for your quick response and there is apparently an item on the Garmin forum about this.

That is good to hear. It is great that Garmin is adding that feature to that series of nuvi's after receiving feedback from customers. I don't think they intended it to do routes from a PC to the unit. Its a nice feature to have though.

Has Garmin solved the problem that will allow Mapsource to transfer routes from a laptop to the 3790 unit. Art from Markham stated that a firmware update is coming at the end of March, can this be confirmed and is it ready.

I am also curious if Garmin has resolved this. I am interested in a Nuvi 3xxx series but transferring routes from MapSource to the unit is an absolute must.

So I have the 3790LMT, I have mapsource. I can import routes in GPX format to mapsource from MS S&T. I can then transfer this to my 3790LMT but only waypoints. Routes do not transfer. I can export to the microSD card in the 3790 but the 3790 has no way of reading the imported route. Other than this issue the 3790LMT is a well designed, lightweight unit.

Does anyone know if Garmin is still going to provide a firmware update to allow for the transfer of routes from Mapsource to the 3790 unit?

I have been waiting for the new firmware.
I did download some firmware (October 15,2011), but I still can't download routes.
I am on a mac, and use Garmin Base Camp.
I also use mapsource.
This is frustrating. I bought the unit for downloading my routes.
I had a street pilot that was stolen....no problem with routes there.

Sorry but I don't think that was a feature intended for the Nuvi 3790. Some customer have said Garmin is going to add it but we have heard nothing at our end. The new nuvi 3490 however does work with routes created on the PC or Mac. Not all Garmins can import routes. Please contact us for assistance picking one that does.
