Hi all, I bought recently an aera500.
The device is delivered with a connector plate to clip on the back side.
On this plate is a mini usb port.
When I connect this port to a PC the message "USB on wrong port" appears on the screen.
The battery is not charing and no connection to the computer.
Is this a bug or for what purpose is this usb port?

The USB port on the back of the cradle is for Garmin accessories like the Garmin XM weather and audio radio. To connect the unit to your PC you need to take the battery cover off and use the USB port located next to the battery. If this does not help please let us know.

Hello Jordan

The port in the battery compartement works well but I dont want to open the device for charging the battery all the time.
In the scope of delivery is only a cable for cigarette lighter and a cable for usb connection to PC.
I dont have a car battery at home so that Ihave to use the usb cable for charging.
Anyway thanks for the information.

I have a Aera 500. I practiced holding patterns today and I'd like to copy the tracking pictures on my Area to my computer so I can study my practices. How do I do this? I know how to plug the Area 500 into my computer via a USB port. My computer recognizes my Area. I'm able to go onto flygarmin and check for map updates. I just want to copy the tracking. Suggestions?

You should be able to download Basecamp for free to get the track log out of the unit. Then the standard USB cable it comes with will connect to the PC. Just make sure it is plugged into the port inside the battery cover. Use the transfer button in Basecamp to get the data off and on the Aera.

Jordan,
Thanks for the info on Basecamp. I have another question. When I activate an approach and then say yes to the prompt for Vectors to Final am I supposed to hear a voice giving me the vectors or do the vectors just appear on the display as Course to Steer?

Hello Jim,

Based on the documentation it looks like it will give visual guidance in aviation mode for your vectors to final. Voice navigation is for car driving only.

Here is a link to the detailed manual.

Hey Jordan,
Thanks for the info on audio vectors. Another short question. I have reviewed the manual in reference to TIS with my 500. Do I understand correctly that this is a service I could use my 500 to implement?

Hello Jim,

If you have the Garmin GTX 330 you can implement TIS on your Aera 500 (Page 101 of the Pilots guide). Unfortunately we are not allowed to sell the module because it is panel mounted. We are only authorized to do aviation handhelds at this time.

Cheers
Jordan

I have a question about the "USB on Wrong Port" message. I have the 560 and when I pop it into my aviation cradle I sometimes get this message (70% of the time actually). The aviation cradle has just the one cord coming from the back and the XM anntena cable plugs into the end of that (as does the power and the audio out). My problem is that when I power up the unit I get the message above and the XM will not work. The only solution that I have found is that I have to cycle the 560 on and off up to 10 times before the message goes away and the XM functions properly. Sometimes it works right from the start and sometimes it takes for ever. What gives? Do I have a bad unit? Bad software?

Hello Clark,

I would suggest a firmware update to get started. That may resolve your issue. Garmin has a free program called webupdater. If the problem happens again try unplugging the GXM antenna and plug it back in without cycling the units power. Maybe the GXM antenna is having the issue. If your problem still continues please contact Garmin for repair and or aviation technical assistance. 1-800-800-1020

Cheers

Hello,
Can I download and run BaseCamp (+ BirdsEye raster maps) on my Aera500 (I didn't see the Aera500 in the list of compatible devices, but maybe the list hasn't been updated yet ?)
Thanks a lot for your help
Christian
