I have an oregon 450. I tried plugging in a standard Mini-usb cable plugged into a USB adapter today. The Oregon acted like I had plugged it into the computer. Will the Garmin adapter allow continued use of the Oregon while it is plugged in i.e. will I still be able to see the map or will it go to the screen that shows it is plugged into a computer?

Yes using the Garmin power cable will allow you to use the unit while it is being powered. Cables made for other devices with most likely not work
