I am experiencing a problem with my Gillson cable where it causes the backlight to drop out occassionally on my Nuvi 500. The unit seems to operate properly on the battery but when power is applied through the Gilson cable, the backlight drops out (occassionally). Might the cable be defective?? Please advise.

Hello Bill,

I would try an update on the GPS unit to see if it is a software issue. I would also check the settings in the unit to make sure that the backlight power is set to 100% when the unit is plugged in and running off battery.

Tools->Settings->Display->Brightness Set the level with the cable plugged in and unplugged.

Cheers

Jordan, here's a further update: The brightness is/was set to 100 percent. The backlight going dim seems to happen when the unit is powered on first manually with the unit's power switch and then DC power is supplied (by turning on the ignition switch on the bike). It's almost like when you plug the GPS into the computer and it goes into USB mode. Otherwise, if I just leave the unit off and power up the bike, it seems to be fine. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to work or not, but I wouldn't think so. I will see if there are any updates for my unit from Garmin.

Hello Bill,

That sounds like a firmware update may fix the unit. Seems like it is having problems detecting power when plugged in when on. Thank you for passing on your findings.

Cheers
