Original question asked on May 25, 2011, 9:26pm
A couple of years ago I wired a Gilsson GUSB-5V-B to my boat to power my eTrex Vista HCX. I recently purchased a GPSMAP 62S and the Garmin power cable 010-11131-00 (listed as power for Nuvi 5xx Series and Zumo 220, but I understand also functions for Oregon/Colorado series and the 62s). In addition to these two wires, I'm aware of the Garmin cable 010-11131-10 which appears to be equivalent to the GUSB-5V-B.

I planned to run the 010-11131-00 in addition to the Gilsson I already have wired in so that I could use either GPS unit in the boat. BUT, if they are equivalent I'll just run one. I don't mind trying one cord with both units, but I don't want to fry one my GPS's.

Now to my questions:
Do you know if the Garmin 010-11131-00, Garmin 010-01131-10 and Gilsson GUSB-5V-B would be interchangeable (i.e. 1 cable can power my 62s and eTrex Vista HCX)? No big deal if they can't...it's just another cable to run.

Do both these units (vista HCX and the 62s) use the same 5V input? Or maybe that question is better asked, do all these cables take the 12V from the battery down to 5V?

I'm just using these for power, no data transfer requirements.

Thanks,
Steve

The Garmin cable is recommended.

010-11131-00 Power and data
010-11131-10 Power only

The vista HCX and 62S use the USB power for power. The Garmin cables take 10 to 30V down to 5V for powering the GPS unit. The data connection can be hooked up to a DSC compatible Radio to send your position to coast guard officials for rescue.
