I have a related question concerning a power supply for my Garmin GPSMAP 78sc. I noticed that there are two different recommended power supplies on the Garmin site - one is a four-pin cable, and the other appears to plug into the USB port on the unit. I have three questions:
1. Are there any major differences between powering the unit via USB vs the four-pin?
2. Do either (or both) of these power source options enable the unit to charge NiMH batteries?
3. Will any old USB power adapter (ie. for computer, automobile, or wall outlet) work equally well to power the unit and/or charge batteries inside the unit?

Thanks,
Frank

Howdy Frank,

1. USB is 12V in and 5V out and the four pin connector is 12 Vin and 12Vout. the four pin is straight wires to the unit without other circuitry. The USB power cable circuit can fail if it gets wet in a marine application. If you are using it in a Car either will be fine.

2. Neither allow you to charge batteries. The unit will not charge batteries because a user could put the wrong type in and cause damage. An external battery charger is required.

3. It is unsure if your current cable will power the unit. We would need to know exactly what cable you have and if we have one available we can test it to be sure.

Cheers
