is this compatible with the new gopro hero 3 black edition?

Right now GoPro only has this screen listed as compatible with the Hero and Hero 2. They have a touch screen coming out that will be compatible with the Hero 3.

Once I have a hero 3 in hand I can double check the older screen with the new units

Now that I have one to test the older Hero LCD Screen is compatible. It works well.

It is much better to get the new touch screen. The touch screen makes switching modes and changing settings quick and easy. It is a must have accessory for the Hero 3. You will also want extra batteries and a 32GB class 10 card. All products are found on our site
