I understand these units will accept the Garmin Topo maps, how well would this unit with topo maps compare to a handheld unit like the Oregon (moving map, zoom, way point, tracks etc) and will the unit be able to switch to the UTM coordinate system?

Thanks

For use on land a handheld is much better but the chartplotter gives you the bigger screen. You can do UTM and most other co-ordinate systems and datums in the GPSMap 526. The interface will not be as easy as the Oregon for the GPSMap 526 is not touch screen.

I plan on mounting the 526 unit on a snowmobile, atv, boat and truck. While in the boat and on snowmobile I would like to use the sounder function, no problem in boat but use for ice fishing while on the snowmobile.
As well as the topo maps for land based position.
The UTM and compass function as well as tracks, waypoints and backtracking are my primary uses. Do you think this unit will accomplish these.

Thanks

I don't think the unit will work well for ice fishing but for other marine use it will work well. The sounder works best when you are trolling.

I personally would not recommend it for all the uses you mentioned but you will be able to get some use out of it on land with the addition of Topo maps. The topo maps are more for lakes that are not covered under Garmin inland lake maps and Bluecharts in this unit.

I would highly suggest a Montana if you need a large screen for onland use and the 526s for boating.
