I boat on Georgian bay, we're new to the area and we only have small boats ~20ft.

We need a GPS to navigate the eastern portion around bone island out to giants toomb. We do not do overnight. Mostly just day trips and to Korean the lake to date (3years) we've been doing it the old fashioned way, watch where other boats go and slow increase your area of known water.

We'd like to start venturing out to areas we've not been to before and the current method won't work.

Would the 640 be your recommendation for our application?

If not what would. Nothing fancy just reliable. Even a gps @ 2k is cheaper than a lower Unit.

Input appreciated.

Dave

My recommendation would be the Garmin GPSMap 421S or similar unit. It is a boating specific unit so that will keep things easier to learn and use. It is also more functional at a fraction of the cost. The main differences are no automotive navigation and no batter in the GPSMap 421S and similar units. It is both NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 compatible. You will also need the chart for Canada.
