If I buy a Garmin GPSMAP 431 now, can I add a compatible transducer and have sonar at a later time?

Yes you can but it is very expensive. You will need to add a GSD which costs just as much as the unit in some cases. Also there will be a lot more bulk and wires because of the extra GSD box.

It is better to buy the GPSMap 431S. S stands for sounder. The Sounder module will be built in so you can just plug in a transducer when you are ready.
