Hi,

We currently have a Garmin GPSMAP 168 GPS with sounder. Can we replace it with 421s using same external antenna and transducer, i.e. without changing anything else except the actual GPS unit?

Hello Shu,

At this time there is no Drop in replacement for the GPSMap 168 in the current Garmin line up. The Garmin GPSMap 421 will come with the power connections to hook it up. It will wire almost the same as the Garmin 168. It has a different connector on the back of the unit.

The transducers are the same. Do you know which transducer you have to be sure?? I noticed that not all the same transducer are listed as accessories.

Cheers
Jordan

Thank you Jordan,

The power hookup is fine, that's not a problem at all for us. We would like to upgrade to the 421s but not at the expense of refitting antenna and transducer. GPS and transducer are listed on the invoice as:
Garmin 168 W/O (EXTERNAL) 010-00199-02
Garmin 010-10119-00 200Khz 12deg Plastic thru-hull.

Can we just plugin a 421s using the same transducer and antenna cables and connectors?

Hello Shu!

The transducer should be fine and the antenna also according to the manuals. The 421's has an internal antenna but if you are using it on a steel or aluminum boat you may need to hook up an external antenna.

Cheers
Jordan

Try putting the chart view in Fishing mode. Fishing mode will show more bottom contour lines. Using the sounder you should also be able to see the bottom change to help find rock piles. There is a sounder tutorial on the Videos page. Just click on the tab above.
