Original question asked on Feb 14, 2012, 12:20am
I have a 4.3M Zodiac Futura that I use as a fishing platform and want to mount this unit with a ram mount onto the Zodiac. For power - I want to use a dedicated 12v 6800ma lithium power pack that is approx 1'x3"x4".

1) What is the current draw on this unit? ie, how long will 12V at 6800ma power this unit? I need to know if I can get by with one power pack - or do I need 2? - or more? ie. 12v with a 1A current draw will give me approx 6 hours of run time on one charge. but I need to know the max current draw for the unit to do a proper calc.

2) For neatness - Is there a short cable transducer mounting option for these units?

3) Which Ram mount is required for this unit?

1) The approximate current draw is 700mA. It would be best to contact the supplier of the battery for discharge rate information because they will know the characteristics of their battery better. I would estimate it can last upto 8 hours based on their specs. (My actual calculations say 10 hours but as the battery gets low it may not power the unit properly so I like to leave a buffer) I would still contact the battery supplier for their thoughts
2) There is no shorter cable for the unit. You can shorten the power leads if your want.
3) The unit comes with a mount but you can use a RAM mount for more flexibility. Here is one suggestion.

Thank you.

1) The recommended maximum continuous current draw for that 12v 6800ma Lithium battery pack is 1500ma/h - so the power draw of the Elite-5 DSI Gold would be at 50% of the batteries capability. Therefor your suggestion of 8 hours is quite do-able.

2) Does Lowrance supply male and female sockets for those who want to shorten the cables?

3) Would the 1" RAM balls be strong enough to hold the Elite-5 DSI Gold?

I have numerous RAM mounts already, mostly with 1" balls, but none are marked as to which part they are. I wish that RAM would include a part number in the molds of their metal parts.

2) They only have the cable that comes in the box plus there is an extension cable to make it longer. Nothing to make it shorter. You can shorten the power cable and then bundle the transducer cable so it is out of the way.

3) I think the RAM-B, one inch, balls should be fine.
