I am looking to buy a Garmin BlueChart Lake Huron - Lake St. Clair Pre-Programmed Data Card for 2010/2006 & 172/178 Series. I realize it is a discontinued item, but was hoping to see if I might still be able to source it. If not is there another way of getting the software or is the unit simply garbage at this point? It works well, but not much use if I cannot get the required charts..

Sorry but mapping on the Garmin cards is no longer available. Garmin only offers the maps on SD card. To get mapping for those areas you will need to buy the charts used. I would suggest upgrading the unit because you will get more up to date charts on SD card which will hopefully make your trips more enjoyable and safer.

so what would a similar model cost me and will I need to replace the transducers, power connections and such on my vessel?

I use the GPSMap 421S and it has been great so far. The unit will have a different power/data/transducer cable but will be compatible with your current transducer. All you need to do is change the main cable and plug your old transducer into it. The transducer sold with the 421S dual may be better than what you currently have. You may want to swap it out or just keep it handy as a replacement. You can also get the 421S without a transducer. I suggest getting it with one.

** the GPSMap 421 with no 'S' at the end can not do depth sounding.
