I would like to replace my 178C with a newer unit but I need one that I could load TOPOGRAPHIC CANADA maps into it.The satellite image maps are not detailed and clear enough in our area. Which model would you recommend? I do not want a unit with touchscreen.

Hello Luc,

The new Garmin sounders can no longer load Topo mapping. However Garmin has updated their inland lakes for Canada and the USA so there are more options and you no longer need Topo's for most lakes in covered provinces.

Am I to understand that GPSMAP 421s cannot load topo maps yet my 60csx and my nuvi 550 can handle ocean charts and topos?
If I put my micro sd card with my topos on into the GPSMAP 421s,
then the unit will not show these maps? Why would garmin do such a thing.

Hello George,

The GPSMap 421S will load topo maps. I am a boater and have checked this feature out for the lakes around Calgary because Garmin does not have good coverage for my lakes yet.

Please make sure to update your GPS unit to get the Topo map feature.
