with the micro chip installed, the screen says" chip installed, no data" Just got this machine out of the box today as a gift, could it be that there is no data, or am I missing something technically? thanks

You have to turn the charts on first. Also not all lakes are covered so you also may not be in an area with coverage. If there is no coverage in your area you may be better off with a Garmin which can load Topo maps for rough lake shore outlines in areas not covered by marine charts. Here is link on how to enable to the maps in the Lowrance chartplotter.
